Communications Director

Golden State Opportunity, a statewide public-private partnership organization leading one of the most effective anti-poverty organizations in the country, seeks a Communications Director to join its growing team.

Location: California (Los Angeles Preferred)

Start Date: October 2019

Responsibilities:  

  • Effectively publicize GSO and CalEITC4Me’s goals, activities, and accomplishments with the news media and key constituency groups
  • Serve as on-the-record spokesperson for GSO
  • Builds relationships with regional and top-tier journalists and other influencers
  • Manages the development of op-eds, talking points, editorial board memos, press releases, blogs, and other materials as needed, including rapid response materials
  • Manage content for the GSO website and multiple social media platforms
  • Develops internal message guidance for team to ensure message discipline
  • Monitor news and seeks opportunities to help drive the conversation and increase awareness of the organization’s work; Pitches news and story ideas
  • Manage the approvals process for all written external communications projects
  • Provide regular reports and analysis to leadership on performance of campaigns and content
  • Manage and oversee the work of a Communication Manager
  • Maintain and updates statewide, regional and national media lists

Job Requirements:

  • Professional work experience in communications, journalism, public relations or a related area, with two years of on-the-record experience; Experience on political and/or advocacy campaigns preferred
  • Strong track record of story placement in the media; Strong familiarity with the media landscape
  • Understanding of campaign tactics such as direct mail, digital, mobile messaging strategies preferred
  • Excellent computer skills, and excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Excellent grammatical and copy editing skills
  • Proficiency with CRM tools
  • Strong project management, multitasking and follow-through skills
  • Highly organized with excellent attention to detail and accurately under deadline
  • Demonstrate an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations
  • Proficiency in speaking and writing in Spanish preferred
  • Connections with California reporters 
  • Frequent travel throughout California
