SAN FRANCISCO — Golden State Opportunity President Amy Everitt released the following statement after Governor Gavin Newsom’s signed legislation to extend the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) to all immigrant workers who file taxes with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN):

“We applaud Governor Gavin Newsom for signing AB1876 to expand CalEITC eligibility to all low-wage immigrant workers. Hardworking taxpayers who work the same job will now be able to receive the same tax refund. Immigrant workers and their families, excluded from federal pandemic relief, bear the brunt of COVID-19 layoffs and job losses and two in three newly eligible workers are essential workers on the frontlines of the pandemic. The CalEITC is one of the most successful—and now inclusive—anti-poverty programs in the country.

Today’s victory for low-wage immigrant families would not be possible without years of dedicated advocacy by immigration and anti-poverty organizations. Now, Golden State Opportunity will begin the critical work to educate immigrant workers about how filing taxes and claiming the CalEITC can help them achieve financial security and thrive.”
