Role Summary

The Digital Organizer leads Golden State Opportunity’s (GSO) organizing and campaign work in the digital realm. Across GSO’s digital channels, and utilizing our suite of outreach tools, they activate GSO’s network of grassroots supporters and partners to eliminate poverty. Through creative and impactful ideas and content, the Digital Organizer expands GSO’s base by building our online following and digital network.

This position plays a major role in advancing GSO’s CalEITC+ program, growing awareness of tax-credits for low-income working families across California, connecting the public with free-tax preparation services in their community, and building awareness of ITIN benefits and services. They serve as a leader on programmatic and advocacy campaign outreach, digital community engagement and represent GSO in digital platforms and spaces. The Digital Organizer also creates an essential feedback loop with GSO’s communications, advocacy, and program staff – letting them know what is successful with audiences, what pain points need attention, and what needs are yet to be met – so that GSO’s campaigns can be continuously improving and evolving.

Job Functions

  • Utilizing GSO’s digital tools, such as the CRM, advocacy action platform, data vendor management and more, execute GSO’s programmatic, advocacy and fundraising campaigns across digital channels, including email, SMS, digital advertising, websites.
  • Oversee and monitor GSO’s engagement with low-income Californians throughout the state via peer-to-peer texting to promote the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), the Federal EITC, and other available public benefits.
  • Collaborate with Deputy Director, Integrated Campaigns, Organizing Manager and Communications staff to develop integrated campaigns and coordinate goals, develop concepts, adapt, and produce content to engage and mobilize our online community to get involved and take action.
  • Cultivate, maintain, and grow an active digital community through list building and engagement by creating calls to action, organic and paid acquisition campaigns, opportunities for relational organizing, and adapting messaging across digital channels.
  • Create compelling content that tells a holistic story about GSO’s work and ensure all communications are consistent and engaging in partnership with the broader communications team. Create, test, and optimize digital content including graphics, videos, and written posts.
  • Develop messaging and scripts to accompany campaigns and use and maintain databases to target and text supporters while providing appropriate follow-up.
  • Work closely with the organizing team to recruit and engage volunteers, create and manage an online volunteer community, and implement digital strategies to advance the campaign’s goals.
  • Monitor and improve the quality, activity, and value of GSO’s digital file by tracking deliverability, engagement, and conversion rates. Provide insights, analytics, and trends that will help grow and share the digital file, inform future content and strategies, and enhance cross-channel engagement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • 2+ (4+ for Senior) years of digital organizing experience, and a track record of building and nurturing high-performing teams in a flexible, fast-moving environment.
  • Data-savvy digital strategist familiar with building, analyzing, and communicating through dashboards and reporting, with a broad understanding of digital tools and technology in the nonprofit sector. Proven skills in measuring and attaining impact.
  • Experience in growing and managing large-scale email and mass texting programs utilizing volunteers. This includes designing engaging email and mobile content, optimizing personalization and inbox placement, implementing welcome and re-engagement tactics, and integrating online advertising for maximum reach and impact.
  • Expertise in evaluating and analyzing digital campaigns, engagement pathways, and acquisition investments, including running A/B tests on messaging and tactics ensuring the health and growth of the digital file.
  • Exceptional writing skills with the ability to draft content quickly and effectively, translating complex ideas into everyday language and telling emotionally compelling stories.
  • Ability to cultivate partnerships and foster connections to enhance digital programs and inform strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement digital organizing plans, track/monitor/assess progress, troubleshoot and adapt as needed
  • Proven ability to tackle problems with actionable plans, generate smart, innovative approaches, not afraid to think outside of the box.
  • Track record of meeting or exceeding digital organizing goals.
  • Strategic and analytical thinking skills with ability to pivot from big picture to detailed implementation.
  • Ability to follow direction, exercise initiative, demonstrate ingenuity, and exercise sound judgment in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Experience working on economic justice and/or with digital engagement with low-income communities, communities of color and/or building low-income or multiracial organizing efforts.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with equity, inclusion, diversity, and belonging principles; proactively prioritizes these principles in one’s work and approach to relationship building.
  • Demonstrated commitment to dismantling systems rooted in oppression and discrimination that create poverty in the U.S.; solid human rights knowledgebase.
  • Resourceful, diplomatic, team-oriented, accountable, and sensitive to the needs of our partners and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team environment and independently, with internal and external stakeholders,and with diverse staff, partners, and vendors.
  • Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, and optimism.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and balance a large portfolio of work; ability to manage one’s time independently and respect agreements, especially around due dates, timeliness, communications, and strategy.
  • Expert proficiency with PC and Mac operating systems and G-Suite and Google Workplace applications as well as Microsoft Office 360 applications.
  • Database expertise with familiarity with platforms like Salesforce and SmartVAN preferred.
  • Leadership and management skills sufficient to coach text banks leads and volunteers.
  • Essential functions and duties require being able to communicate, see, and follow reasonable ergonomic recommendations and/or assistive devices to communicate and/or computer for extended periods.   • Ability to work overtime, holidays, weekends, and evenings as well as travel as needed.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Language skills sufficient to conduct business and community-based conversations in a language other than English; strong preference for Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Russian or Hmong.
  • Proficiency in digital ad strategy and managing constituent opt-in pathways and journeys.
  • Expertise and/or lived experience with low-income communities and their needs, earned income and young child tax credits and policy, and/or economic justice.

Compensation and Benefits

Competitive compensation and benefits package includes employer sponsored medical, dental and vision coverage for you and your family, a 401k, unlimited PTO, 9 days of sick time, and 20 paid holidays a year. Salary ranges for Digital Organizers $65,000-75,000; Senior Digital Organizers $75,000-85,000.
