Community Action Day

On May 20th, GSO brought together a powerful coalition of leaders from across California to advocate at the state capitol for policies that uplift underserved families and break down barriers that keep people in poverty. This series of meetings served as a bold reminder that economic justice begins with community voices and leads to legislative action.

Community partners and supporters joined GSO President Amy Everitt to help uplift the critical need to continue funding the California Earned Income Tax Credit Outreach and Education Program and free tax preparation services, two essential tools in California’s fight against poverty. Each year, these programs allow millions of Californians struggling to make ends meet the ability to build long-term financial stability.

“When community partners participate and share their everyday experiences, they are helping shape the policies proposed in Sacramento,” said Vanessa Orozco, Legislative Advocate for GSO. “Community Action Days helps unite nonprofit, financial, and public sectors; they demonstrate that economic justice is not a siloed effort but a collective mission.”

Our group met with eight legislators: Assemblymember José Luis Solache Jr., Assembly Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur, Assemblymember Gail Pellerin, Assemblymember Blanca Pacheco, Senate Majority Leader Lena Gonzalez, Assemblymember Sade Elhawary and Assemblymember Buffy Wicks.

GSO remains committed to continuing the fight against poverty and ensuring that every Californian, regardless of zip code or income, has the opportunity to build a better future and financially thrive.
