Helping the LGBTQ+ Community Navigate Tax Season and Beyond
June 16, 2026
For years, the San Francisco LGBT Community Center has helped LGBTQ+ individuals navigate financial systems that can often feel confusing and inaccessible. This tax season, with support as a grantee of Golden State Opportunity’s Community Connect Program, the Center expanded access to free tax preparation services, helping community members claim valuable tax credits and refunds while connecting them to trusted financial resources.
The Center has a long history of supporting LGBTQ+ taxpayers. Before marriage equality became federal law, the organization helped same-sex couples navigate complicated tax filings when their marriages were recognized by California but not by the federal government.
“Assisting our community during such a time was highly rewarding and exceptionally helpful,” said Travis S., Director of Financial Services. “Offering free tax services aligns perfectly with our mission and wrap-around services.”

Tacos, Taxes, and Resources
On February 14, the SF LGBT Center partnered with Golden State Opportunity, the office of Senator Scott Wiener, San Francisco CASA, and Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) to host a free Tacos & Taxes event in San Francisco.
The event brought community members together to receive free tax preparation assistance, enjoy tacos, and connect with organizations dedicated to supporting economic mobility and financial well-being. Approximately 45 individuals completed their tax returns during the event, helping ensure they could access refunds and tax credits they had earned.
For many participants, the event offered more than tax assistance—it provided a welcoming and affirming space to receive support from organizations that understand the unique experiences of LGBTQ+ communities.

Building Trust in the Community
Trust is at the center of the SF LGBT Center’s approach to financial empowerment and to all the work they do in the community.
“Our community members face discrimination and ignorance,” Travis said. “Knowing that there is a community center that will not only accept, but also fundamentally understand your lived experiences, is crucial in retaining trust in our community.”
That trust helps the Center connect people to resources that can have a lasting impact on their financial futures. In addition to tax assistance, the Financial Services team provides counseling and education in first-time home buying, rental, small business, and personal finance.
Over the past year, the department delivered more than 2,000 counseling hours and 36 workshops, serving over 1,000 community members. The team has helped families secure affordable housing, become first-time homeowners, launch small businesses, improve credit scores, and reduce debt.
Expanding Access to Free Tax Help
Through its partnership with Golden State Opportunity, the SF LGBT Center is working to make free tax preparation a recurring resource for the community. The organization is also exploring ways to expand its volunteer network and strengthen its capacity to provide tax assistance in future years.
“Partnering with GSO has assisted us with building connections and giving us the tools to help bring this vision to life,” Travis said.
Together, the SF LGBT Center and Golden State Opportunity are helping ensure more Californians can access free tax filing services, claim the credits they deserve, and build a stronger financial future.
