Texas Pilot Leads to 5,900 Knocked Doors, $3,500 Average Tax Return

GSO’s goal of building community power isn’t just limited to California. We want to help communities across the country mobilize and claim the benefits they deserve–starting with the Upward Project, our pilot in Dallas, Texas. During this groundbreaking pilot project, we knocked on 5,900 unique doors, innovated new relationships with private tax firms to provide free tax preparation in West and South Dallas, and delivered an average refund of $3,500.
We also confirmed that too many low-income workers are paying way too much to private preparers. UpwardProject.org, which contains information about how to file taxes for free and claim benefits in English and Spanish, received over 1,000 unique views during the pilot period.
