Last year in California, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers assisted close to 76,000 individuals and families in getting more money in their pockets by providing free basic tax return preparation for low- and moderate-income taxpayers.

This group of dedicated volunteers helped connect individuals and families with tax credits like the California Earned Income Tax (CalEITC), the Young Child Tax Credit (YCTC) for families with small children, and the recently introduced Foster Youth Tax Credits. But we need more volunteers to meet the growing demand.

Earlier this year, the IRS issued a call to action, urgently seeking individuals to join the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for the upcoming tax season. By becoming a VITA volunteer, you play a vital role in providing free tax preparation services to low-income families, ensuring they maximize their refunds through tax credits.

“VITA volunteers are truly the foundation of the success of the crucial VITA program. Every year VITA sites operate at capacity, and there is a huge need for volunteers both in-person and virtually,” shared Andrea Vogler, Senior Programs Coordinator at Golden State Opportunity.

VITA volunteers share a goal: empowering those in need through education and assistance. To become VITA certified, you don’t need any tax experience – the IRS offers comprehensive training, equipping you with the knowledge and tools to assist clients effectively. From unraveling the complexities of tax forms to understanding credits for low-income families, VITA volunteers receive all the support needed to guide clients confidently through the process.

“Becoming a VITA volunteer is more than a commitment; it’s an opportunity to build a stronger, more inclusive community. Your skills and compassion can make a real impact on the lives of those who need it most. I encourage anyone interested to take a chance and be part of something transformative” added Vogler.
